Balance and Fall Prevention

Falls represent a rising public health concern. Currently, falls are the #1 cause of accidental death in people over the age of 65 and one of the leading causes of falls among older adults is loss of balance. Adults over the age of 80 have a 40% chance of falling every year and the risk increases with age. To help reduce the risk of injury among older adults in our communities, Performance Physical Therapy offers free balance screening to evaluate an individual's risk of falling.

If an individual is identified as having a balance disorder, this information is communicated to their primary care physician along with a recommendation for a more in-depth physical therapy evaluation. Although you do not need a physician referral to undergo our free screening, your insurance company may require a referral for you to receive follow-up therapy.

Once you are referred for physical therapy by your physician, one of our experienced therapists will perform a complete evaluation to determine the appropriate course of treatment. Typically, this would involve a series of strengthening, flexibility and balance exercises as well as an individualized home exercise program. Research has shown that balance and strengthening exercises are effective in improving balance and reducing one's risk of falling.

At Performance Physical Therapy, our goal has always been to help our clients improve their quality of life and get back to their normal daily activities with greater confidence and a decreased risk of falling.
